It's a chemical reaction between your body and the other metals in the earrings and rings. Although you think of the silver and gold as pure- jewelry is always made of metals in combination with other metals to give them strength. Both are often mixed with nickel and tin, either of those react by turning grey. Your best best for earrings are to go with surgical stainless steel posts and backs, and coat the insides of the rings with clear nail polish. That's the cheapest and most effective way to deal with the trouble. On the rings you will then have a barrier between your skin and the metal, and you will eliminate it with the earrings. You have to recoat with nail polish on occasion, but that's easy and cheap to do. Or you can just live with it- it's not hurting anything in particular. It's just kind of ugly looking sometimes.
