How do people keep ice cream from melting on the way home from the supermarket in the United States?
In my country, when buying ice cream in a supermarket, we get a complimentary dry ice token from the cashier and go to a machine near the supermarket entrance. The dry ice keeps our ice cream frozen on the way home. But last summer, when I visited the US, none of the supermarkets I visited had such a system. So now I'm wondering how Americans keep their ice cream from melting on the way home from the supermarket in the United States. Please share your own experiences or insights. This will be helpful since I'm planning to move to the US soon!
In America seldom does someone go to the supermarket on foot they go in their cars, as we do here in the UK, even though we may live almost next door to one. Reason being shopping is to heavy to carry home ourselves, plus we're all now a society that has become so used to the convenience of a car. And therein lays the answer. You either keep one of those Picnic frozen boxes in the boot of your car and transfer the ice cream into that as you leave the supermarket. Here we have plastic bags that have a plastic filling within the lining of the bag, can't think what they are called, but you can either put hot or cold items within them, and they work both ways. I imagine though it would only keep something cold though for 20 minutes or so.
I say buy one of the picnic boxes, or probably you'd call them Ice Boxes and then keep that in the boot.
