I have a fairly new saltwater tank(3 mos) I am having a problem with what I believe to be ich.What can I do?
I have invertebrates in the tank(26 gal) with about 8 fish,I lost my jawfish today,he just started acting sick,but now my foxface is covered with spots.I've tried the freshwater dip for him,but he seems to be a little worse even.I'm new at saltwater and I've heard so much.I am considering using a copper treatment but I'll have to remove my invertebrates.Any suggestions would be so much appreciated???
Wow, wait. Slow down for a minute there. For a start your tank sounds fairly overstocked which won't be helping your cause any, especially if Ich really is taking hold. My first question to you would be have you checked your water quality? It's possible you've had another cycle which is causing your grief, I'd run a nitrate/nitrite/ammonia/pH test just to see what your baseline is - ideally these would be <10/0/0/~8.2 respectively, with the two middle ones being the most crucial. If that's not an issue, then move along to treatment - which in this case would be using a combination of copper and hyposalinity with your invertebrates removed. They won't withstand the copper or the hypo treatments, so it's best to set up a temporary holding tank for them while you treat your display. http://saltaquarium.about.com/od/hyposalinity/Hyposalinity_OST_Osmotic_Shock_Therapy.htm is a good resource on various articles about inducing both of these conditions, give them a read and try to sort it out as soon as possible.
Once everything is good again, take the Foxface back to where you got it. It has no place in a 26. Any other similarly sized fish too. The more you stock foolhardily, the more problems you'll run into.
