What metal is used as prongs in an engagement ring? Or any ring for that matter?
I've been looking at ring designs and my heart is set on a rose or yellow gold setting. But I noticed that even if the metal used in the ring is rose or yellow gold, the prongs used are not in yellow or rose gold. The prongs looked like either platinum, silver or white gold.
The ring would look alright from the top but from the side it looked somewhat off to me, because the color of the band and the prongs doesn't match.
The only rings so far that I've seen w/ matching prong and band color (or metal) are the ones from Cartier (their 1895 solitaire and Trinity e-ring).
Is it possible to request a prong w/ a matching color w/ the band? Or is this a standard?
Standard fpr prongs is Platinum or a lower Karat gold (lower the Karat the more mixed metals and less gold). As far as if you can get the ring to match? The answer is Yes it is your right to request what ever you desire. It is Your ring. Harder metals are usually used for the prongs because they get the most wear and tear, and if you choose a softer metal you take the chance on having your gem become loose and having it fall off and get lost. Talk to your jeweler and if they are good they will be able to advise you on your best choices.
They can mix metals to give different tints and hardness or even use a plating process. They should get it close enough that the "untrained" eye will never see the difference in the metal. People that have commented on the effect of the stone clarity in regards to the metal color are correct, but that is one more decision you will have to make.
Like I said It is Your ring and ultimately Your choice.
