How to make Resin Necklace with real Insects?
I mainly plan to make real butterfly crafted necklace with resin, which was what my friend recommended. Don't worry, I don't kill bugs just for display/crafting purposes. I mean to probably do this after a butterfly or some other insect dies of natural cause. I figured it would make a nice gift for my little cousins 'cause they love bugs, especially butterflies. I wanna make mature looking necklaces, ones you see with detailed designed wiring around a resin with a bug inside. I don't know exactly where to start though~~I've only found some general information on what items you will need but can someone offer me a more detailed guide or a good website at least? Thanks I appreciate it~
Generally you won't get good results with butterflies. The scales come off really easy. In addition iridescent colors rely on interaction between air and scale and if you replace the air with resin, those types of color will usually go away.
It can be done, but it's a fairly lengthy procedure and can require some toxic material. You need to replace water and/or air inside the insect with the resin. The main problem with embedding insects into resin is that the resin shrinks a bit upon curing. If there is air still in the insect it's likely to come out and then you won't see the insect clearly through the resin. If you are still interested you should check out resin embedding methods for biological tissue (e.g. for transmission electron microscopy). It's basically the same procedure.
