Brighton Peace
Henry Pulling is a manager has recently left the bank. He was offered a settlement after several years of dedicated service when his bank was taken over by another. He is eager to spend more time with the dahlias that are his pride and joy, and also rubbing shoulders with his former customers Southwood, an ordinary suburban London that seems to be populated entirely by retired officers of the armed forces. He mentions Omo lot and is vaguely hampered by the fact that he shares initials with a well known brand of sauce. And then he meets his long lost aunt, Agatha Bertram.
The Henri's mother has just died. His father died forty years ago. He never really knew the father and his relationship with his mother is perpetually tense. After the funeral, Agathe took her on one side and calmly informs her father was a kind of "rogue" and his "mother" was really his stepmother, his true biological mother being one of the bits of his father on the side. Henry Pulling is attracted by her aunt, not not because it is something of an eccentric old bird unpredictable, but also because it retains, somewhere, the secret of his own origins. When she suggests they travel together, we strongly supports, despite the fact that he has never been away from the nest.
Graham Greene was Henry and Aunt Agatha travel as far as Brighton, Istanbul and South America. Together, through stories of the past Aunt Agatha, they relive the first half twentieth-century roots to the end of 1960 Victorian drug culture, fascist dictators, from war to peace. Throughout Henry Pulling appears a genial, Gent predictable in his late fifties, when Aunt Agatha seems to be a confirmed case member of Hell's Grannies. Europe - the world even - Seems to be littered with his conquests, with barely a country without a little faded memory of his return to life.
As it unfolds, Travels With My Aunt is proving a real masterpiece of fiction of the twentieth century. The characters really do live Through the history of the century, but events are never pressed on the surface of their lives. Instead they are interwoven into the fabric of Aunt Agatha his being a character whose complexity unfolds as the story progresses.
Throughout Henry Pulling is a really comic. It seems out of his depth, naïve, a product of over-protected suburban existence, over-burdened with assumptions of his education. But he comes in his and, ultimately, it is not surprising when he describes his new life, which is almost as far from the office of a director Bank suburb as it is possible to obtain. And, of course, the climax of history, when it happens, is not a surprise. And not less because of this.
There are many laughs along the way, especially because of Henry constantly taken aback by the abruptness of his aunt and thirst life. Especially memorable, however, had scenes where Henry has put his foot in his personal creation. The Paraguay national day, it is a red scarf on the advice of his aunt so he can give allegiance to the ruling party and the dictator. It just happens to be outside the headquarters military and politics when he sneezes and use the scarf as a handkerchief. A soldier near the snotting recorded in the national emblem as deeply insulting and irreverent, regularly beat and slapped in jail. Situation comedy at its best.
Travels with My Aunt is simply must have read and reread book. Immense skill of Graham Greene offers a simplicity of style and construction to provide a complex plot together characterization of the powerful and accomplished all this with a real economy, but elegant. It is a beautifully crafted book, cleverly written, full of surprises and humor, all on a plot deadly serious: surely a masterpiece.
